 - Mrs. Scates -

Hi there!  I have been a teacher at Farmington High School since 2019.  I am the DECA advisor and Work-Based Learning Facilitator.  I currently teach Marketing I, Intro to Business, and Banking and Finance.  I had my first job right after high school in 1993.  I was a telecommunications operator at JB Hunt corporate office while attending the University of Arkansas, where I received my Associate's Degree in Administrative Office Procedures.

I have worked in office management jobs in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, restaurant, health club, and wholesale distribution.  It was working with young people in these jobs that fueled my desire to return to school to become a teacher.  As a manager, I was frustrated that employees didn't have the soft skills or work ethic to interview, secure a job, and be successful in entry-level positions.  I wanted to mitigate failure and do my part to prepare high school students for the workforce or post-secondary education by providing them with the necessary tools for success.  At 36, with three young children and working, I returned to the U of A and earned my bachelor's in Human Resources and Workforce Development, and went straight into the master's degree program to earn my MAT.

I began my teaching career in the Fayetteville school district, teaching keyboarding and career development.  I then moved to Lincoln for 4 years, where I taught a wide variety of CTE classes.  Now, I've landed in Farmington, where I plan to build my nest until retirement.  The students here are eager, the administration is so encouraging and supportive, and the community is thriving.  I love children and teaching.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Jen, Former Student

I loved having Mrs. Scates as a teacher.  If you are lucky enough to have her, you will learn in ways that don't seem like work.  She teaches life and how to navigate it.

Marianne, CTE Director

I was immediately struck by Carrie's ability to articulate a vision of student learning.

Bethany, Former Mentor

As a model of appropriate behavior, she is in a league of her own
and can provide extra instructional support based on individual student assessments.
